MARGOT FONTEYN: Charity auction
03/09/2012 by Alan Cole in the UK
Ballerina’s shoes to be auctioned for charity cause
A charity sale is taking place this month of shoes belonging to world-famous ballerina Dame Margot Fonteyn.
The pair of dainty shoes were owned by Fonteyn, regarded by many as the world’s greatest female performer of classical ballet...
The auction sale date is now set for September 8, 2012 in England at DGS auctions in Hythe, Kent...
The pair of original pointe ballet shoes owned by Dame Margot Fonteyn will be auctioned along with an autograph book with her signature and a letter that was written by her.
The ballet shoes have been entered into the auction by the daughter of Mrs Joy Crossen who was theatrical agent for a leading dancewear company and owned a dancewear business in South Africa...
Mrs Joy Crossen’s business, The Red Shoes, supplied ballet companies and performing art schools with Gamba soft and pointe shoes...
The ballet shoes along with the letter were given to Mrs Crossen by Gamba dancewear, the UK shoe manufacturer...
The letter is signed by Dame Margot Fonteyn in her married name...
The shoes and the letter have been in Mrs Crossen’s possession since the seventies...
The shoes have been placed for auction by Cheryl White who received the shoes from her mother Joy Crossen.
Crossen originally received the shoes, that uniquely have amendments written into them on a sole, from Michael Gamba.
There is no estimate for the shoes. Previous sales of items belonging to the ballerina have far exceeded estimates...
Fonteyn spent her entire career with the Royal Ballet and died in 1991 a household name. She is fondly remembered for her partnership with Rudolph Nureyev, the Russian ballet star who similarly transformed audiences' expectations of ballet during his career...
The pair brought ballet to a mass audience starring in films such as Swan Lake in 1967 and Romeo and Juliet in 1966 but they were also revered by dance theatre audiences....
The seller plans proceeds of the auction to go towards helping create scholarships for young dancers...
