Acclaimed Spanish actress says no to fur on eve of New York Fashion Week

Penelope Cruz is partnering with PETA, the animal welfare charity, to pile pressure on the fashion industry to join her and boycott fur...



With New York Fashion Week getting set to get underway (February 9-16) PETA US has launched a new anti-fur advert featuring Penelope Cruz, the celebrated actress and fashion icon.

PETA US is running a 70ft billboard in New York for fashion week that stars the Oscar-winning actress and includes the slogan: Give Fur the Cold Shoulder.

PETA's campaign will continue in London and Milan.

Cruz is the latest female fashion icon to become vocal about the distasteful process of using real fur in fashion. Other women speaking out on this subject have included Michelle Obama, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Twiggy, Kelly Osbourne, Pink, Pamela Anderson, Eva Mendez and others.

Designers such as Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and Tommy Hilfiger have also taken the fur-free pledge in line with the modern fashion view that sees animal cruelty as the antithesis of elegance and style.

Animal rights charities have long campaigned against fur in fashion on account of the suffering animals must endure to create the fur trims and materials used in a range of garments. But despite fur becoming increasingly such an offensive faux pas in enlightened quarters, PETA says millions of animals continue to suffer cruelly each year, including some which are skinned alive for their fur.

The range of animals that are exploited for fur is numerous and includes foxes, minks, rabbits, and even dogs and cats…

PETA has been one of the leading charities drawing attention to the abhorrence of the fur trade that uses such animals for fashion, especially the horror of fur farming. It says eighty-five per cent of the fur industry's skins come from animals raised on fur factory farms, where animals are cramped for their entire lives in wire cages, only to be killed for their fur. Animals are also trapped in the wild for some fur clothing products, a practice which is also inhumane, ensuring they often suffer horribly for days before being killed.

PETA's current campaigning involves asking animal lovers to pledge support and let the fashion industry and others who profit from cruelty to animals know it is totally unacceptable. In doing so, they will be joining Penelope Cruz and many other public figures, famous for their fashionable attire, who are increasingly saying no to fur in fashion.

At the end of the day a stop to the consumer demand of such products globally has the power to halt the cruelty to these animals in the name of fur for good...
