LIONEL MESSI: Mexico charity game
19/06/2012 by Alan Cole in the UK

Messi on target in fundraising fixture for charities

With his Spanish international club colleagues riding high in Euro 2012, Argentinian international Lionel Messi has been keeping in shape in a charity fixture in Mexico...

The Argentina and FC Barcelona star hit the net on two occasions in the charity game.

Messi and his team were 5-3 victors in the Mexican and Americas All Stars fixture with Brazilian Diego also on the score sheet during a game that raised money for charities, including a disabled children's charity.

The star, regarded as the best player in the world, said he was happy with how the event went, referring to the game and the turn out which contributed to the fundraising efforts...

More than 20,000 watched the charity event at the stadium Andres Quintana Roo in Cancun.

Argentina's Damian Alvarez, Daniel Montenegro and Colombian star Darwin Quintero scored for Messi’s opponents...

Before the match Messi held a training session for children and signed autographs.

The event raised funds for the Foundation Messi and Development of the Family (DIF) of Quintana Roo in South Eastern Mexico.

Messi and the two all-star teams played in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday in Cancun.

The match also featured Brazilian Dunga and fellow Brazilian Ricardo 'Tuca' Ferreti coaching the teams...

Messi also visited a children's rehabilitation centre before the game.

Lionel Messi is an active supporter of children’s charity work and operates as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF...

The Barcelona player signed up with UNICEF to endorse campaigns that encourage sports and outdoor activities for children and also backs projects that support children's rights and tackle child poverty.

The star's charity foundation was established in 2007 and raises funds to support access to education and health care for vulnerable children...
