Greenpeace has been building its campaign in recent months calling on Shell to abandon its plans to drill for oil in the Arctic.

Greenpeace promises it will embark on an expedition to plant the scroll once it reaches the one million figure, planting it on the seabed at the North Pole, 4km beneath the ice... The scroll pledge will then be marked by a flag designed by young people, representing the future.

As well as fending off Shell the campaign wants to see the uninhabited area surrounding the North Pole given legal protection to safeguard it from pollution activities.
