SAVE ARCTIC: 100 celebrities
22/06/2012 by Alan Cole in the UK

A galaxy of 100 stars launch new Greenpeace campaign to save the Arctic

Phew...Paul McCartney, Thom Yorke, Richard Branson, Penelope Cruz, Robert Redford and 95 other big name celebrities say Yes to Greenpeace and No to Shell...

The celebs are backing Greenpeace's campaign to save the Arctic.

Pedro Almodovar, Emily Blunt, Woody Harrelson, Lucy Lawless, Tim Roth and Javier Bardem are amongst the 100 famous names who have signed an Arctic 'sea scroll' in defence of the pristine Arctic...

Greenpeace has been building its campaign in recent months calling on Shell to abandon its plans to drill for oil in the Arctic.

While Shell says it is planning safe, environmentally responsible oil explorations in the Arctic Greenpeace and its supporters are distraught about the threat to the unique environment...

Paul McCartney explains: "It seems madness that we are willing to go to the ends of the Earth to find the last drops of oil when our best scientific minds are telling us we need to get off fossil fuels to give our children a future.

"At some time, in some place, we need to take a stand. I believe that time is now and that place is the Arctic."

'No Pasaran' say the 100 strong pack of celebrity eco-supporters, who have signed the scroll which Greenpeace is hoping will eventually hold one million names...

Greenpeace promises it will embark on an expedition to plant the scroll once it reaches the one million figure, planting it on the seabed at the North Pole, 4km beneath the ice... The scroll pledge will then be marked by a flag designed by young people, representing the future.

Others from the lengthy list of 100 high profile supporters include the boy band One Direction, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dev Patel, Alexandra Burke, Bianca Jagger, Tom Stoppard, Troels Kløvedal, Tsang Tsui-shan Jessey, Uri Fruchtmann, Hugh Grant, Cilla Black, Paul Simonon, Gabby and Kenny Logan, Imelda Staunton, Jack White, Vivienne Westwood, Jim Broadbent, Bryan Adams, Peter Gabriel, the list goes on...

As well as fending off Shell the campaign wants to see the uninhabited area surrounding the North Pole given legal protection to safeguard it from pollution activities.

The project launch at the Rio Earth Summit follows several months of campaigning and direct action by Greenpeace supporters...

Actress Lucy Lawless, of Xena Warrior Princess fame, was the first high profile supporter for Greenpeace’s efforts to stop Shell contracted ships heading off to the Arctic.

Lucy Lawless and fellow New Zealand Greenpeace supporters boarded a drillship at the port of Taranaki. The actress and committed environmentalist is now set to be sentenced in September for her part in the action which lasted for several days...

Shell is planning exploratory drilling at two offshore sites in the Alaskan Arctic...

Radiohead's Thom Yorke is one of the other outspoken critics of the oil exploration plans.

"We have to stop the oil giants pushing into the Arctic, he says.

"An oil spill in the Arctic would devastate this region of breathtaking beauty - while burning that oil will only add to the biggest problem we all face, climate change..."

The Greenpeace campaign appears determined to protect the Arctic and avoid fresh contributions to climate change...
